New Delhi:It is likely that the Indian government might consider extending the resident visa of Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen. The development comes after the controversial writer met Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday with her with a request to extend her stay in India for longer than two months. She has claimed that Singh has assured her of a long term multiple entry visa like before.
"It is most likely that she will get an extension but so far it hasn't been granted. Her security verification is pending. We should be able to complete the verification in the next two months till then she has a short term visa," an offical from The Minsitry of Home Affairs said.
The 51-year-old writer had applied for a resident permit and the Ministry granted her the same type of visa but only for two months starting August 1.
Following her outburst on a social networking site, support for her has been pouring from various quarters with Press Council of India Chairperson and former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju demanding permanent visa for the 51-year-old who has been living in exile since 1994.
The Bangladeshi author has been living in self exile since 1994 in the wake of death threats by Muslim fundamentalist outfits. Taslima is now a citizen of Sweden. She has been continuously getting Indian visa since 2004.
