CHENNAI: The five bank robbery suspects, who were gunned down in a police encounter, were identified by witnesses during a magisterial inquest on Friday at the Government General Hospital where the bodies had been kept.According to police, Geetha Rani, 14th judicial magistrate, Egmore, began examining the bodies of the five persons, who were earlier identified as Vinod Kumar, Chandrika Re, Vinay Prasad, Abhay Kumar and Harish Kumar. Police sources said that the injuries and other identification marks on the body of the bank robbers were examined at the mortuary of the Government General Hospital during the day-long process that began around 11 am and went on till late in the evening. Police sources said apart from that, witnesses in bank robberies – four staff members from Bank of Baroda, Perungudi and 13 from Indian Overseas Bank, Keelkattali – were brought in to identify the bodies of the suspects. Witnesses including Balaji, senior manager, Bank of Baroda, Perungudi, cashier Shankar were present at the GGH, sources added.Two automobile dealers, who alleged that the suspects had purchased a two-wheeler and attempted to sell back to them, were also present to identify the bodies, police said and added that the autopsy was likely on Saturday. The magisterial probe in to the case began on Thursday when the judicial magistrate visited the scene - house at TNHB Colony, Velachery – where the police encounter took place. An inquiry was also conducted with the neighbours of the suspects gunned down and the police officials, who were involved in the encounter. The magistrate visited the two police inspectors, who were injured in the encounter. Five suspected bank robbers were gunned down in a police encounter in the house they had rented at TNHB Colony, Velachery in the wee hours of Thursday.
