New Delhi: The Intelligence Bureau has warned on Tuesday that airports across India are not at all equipped to handle a Brussels like terror attack prompting the Home Ministry to order a security audit of at least 100 civil airports.
The IB in its report has cited perimeter security and cargo areas as a matter of great concern.
Following the IB report, the Centre has decided to ask Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to guard all airports in the country.
According to reports, around 17 airports in India are not guarded by CISF and the State police and are instead monitored by the CRPF.
At least 8 of the 17 airports are sensitive and the remaining are hyper sensitive airports.
The civil aviation ministry had earlier requested for a specialised force for airport security called Aviation Security Force following the rising threat to airports across the world following attacks in Brussels and Turkey.
However, this suggestion was rejected after a high level meet between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), National Security Advisor (NSA) and Civil aviation ministry.
Instead a time bound security audit was ordered for all airports in the country.
Kanu Gohain, former head of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also expressed concerns over the current security of airports and has specifically pointed for a need to increase perimeter security of all major airports.
