A young Indian deck cadet, working with a Mumbai-based merchant shipping company, has been reported missing since Friday night.
22-year-old Pranav Karad went missing when he was deployed on a tanker travelling between Singapore and Indonesia, according to The Indian Express. Pranav’s family, who are residents of Pune’s Warje area, are seeking help from the Indian government, the newspaper said.
Employed by Mumbai-based Wilhelmsen Ship Management India for six months, Karad’s whereabouts remain unknown since the company notified his family. Pranav’s father, Gopal Karad, a Pune-based driver said his son had completed a course in nautical sciences from MIT, Pune, and was working with Wilhelmsen Ship Management.
He said that the family was trying to approach the police in Pune and Mumbai and other authorities to help them reach the Prime Minister’s Office and external affairs and shipping ministries. “He was deployed as a deck cadet on the Resolve II vessel. On Thursday, we got a call and later an email on Friday from the ship authorities saying Pranav was missing from the ship when it was between Singapore and Indonesia,” Gopal Karad said.
“The company is telling us that the search is on but nothing more about how he went missing. We spoke to him on a WhatsApp call on Thursday. The company is not providing any contacts of others serving with him.”
