Indian men win team golf silver
The Indian golf team compiled 849 points to finish second to the South Koreans, who aggregated 836.

Doha: The Indian men's golf team turned in their best performance on Monday to bag the silver despite early morning drizzle and cloudy weather conditions at the 15th Asian Games here.

The Indian women's team, comprising all youngsters, finished sixth on the par-73 layout.

The Indians compiled 849 points to finish second to the South Koreans, who aggregated 836 while Chinese Taipei won the bronze with 850.

The three best individual scores from each of the four days went to the team's account.

India were aided by fine performances from Gaganjeet Bhullar and Chiragh Kumar, whose scores were counted for India each of the four days as they were always among the two best Indian scores.

India, fourth after three rounds, totalled 849 to South Korea's 836 points.

India edged out Chinese Taipei (850) by one point and pre-Games favourites Japan for a medal. Japan ended fourth with 853.

Bhullar's four rounds of 70, 70, 70 and 73 gave him a tied seventh place.

"I could have finished higher as I missed a lot of birdies and gave away a few bogeys," he rued.

Chiragh (72) ended with rounds of 71, 71, 71 and 72 for three-under 285 in tied 11th place.

Anirban Lahiri (69, 73, 72, 72) was two-under 286 and tied 14th, while Joseph Chakola (73, 70, 70, 77) scored two-over 290 and was tied 18th.

"It was a great game, but I could have been at least four or five shots better. I had a couple of poor strokes. I messed up some of the easiest holes," said Bhullar.

"I shot a 73 but had five-under for four days. I made a bogey on ninth. But overall it was a good game, but the opponents (Taipei and Japan) were not so strong today."

In the women's individual section, Meghna Bal, who turns 18 only Dec 27, was the best with rounds of 71, 70, 70 and 70 for 11-under 281, good enough only for a tied ninth spot.

India's Vaishavi Sinha (74, 76, 75, 74) was tied 16th as was her compatriot Sharmila Nicollet (77, 71, 70, 81). Both were seven over 299.

In the team event, the Indian women finished sixth while South Korea matched their men counterparts and won the gold with 534 points. Japan was second with 547 and Chinese Taipei third with 550.

The fourth-placed China (566), fifth placed the Philippines (569) and India (570) were rather close.

It was a fine performance by an Indian team that had an average age of just 17 years. Vaishavi is 16, Sharmila 15 and Meghna is not even 18.

India had won men's team gold in 1982, and this is the second time the country has finished on podium.

In 2002, India's Shiv Kapur had won the individual gold in Busan.

Here, the individual gold went to Kim Kyung Tae of South Korea, who shot a final round of 70 and a total of 12-under 276.

Young Pan Cheng Tsung of Chinese Taipei clinched for silver with a total of 11-under 277. He missed a birdie on the last hole that could have tied him for first place.

Michael Eric Bibat (70) gave Philippines the bronze after tying for third spit. He totalled nine-under 279, but won the bronze on count back over Choo Tze Huang of Singapore and Kim Do Hoon Sr Choo shot 70 and Kim shot 72 on final day.
