CHENNAI: Four persons, including the owner of a de-addiction centre, were arrested after a 35-year-old inmate, who was admitted there, died under mysterious circumstances on Saturday.On June 12, Guindy resident P Mohammad Rafiq, an alcoholic, was admitted to the Rasiman de-addiction and yoga centre in Manali New Town by his family. On Saturday evening, Rafiq was brought to the Stanley medical hospital by Dhanasekaran, owner of the centre, and three employees in an unconscious condition. On examining him, the doctors pronounced him dead.In a complaint lodged with the Manali New Town police on Sunday, his relatives alleged foul play in Rafiq’s death and demanded a thorough probe. Inquiry by a police team led by sub-inspector Thirumalai coupled with the post-mortem report showed that Rafiq had died as a result of injuries sustained during assault. When the police team went to the de-addiction centre to question the owner K Dhanasekaran (52) of Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar and the three staffers, Manivannan of Vyasarpadi, Kirankumar, a native of Karnataka, and Srikanth of Chinna Kodangaiyur, they found that the four accused men had taken to their heels.On receiving information that they were hiding near a church on Ponneri High Road, police rushed to the spot and zeroed in on the quartet on Monday. Upon being grilled, the men confessed to have beaten up Rafiq after he refused food and created a commotion at the centre on Saturday. When he succumbed to his injuries, they brought him to Stanley medical hospital, dumped him there and escaped. All the four men were arrested and lodged in Puzhal prison.
