THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Insight, the joint initiative of the Kerala State IT Mission and SPACE for developing ICT tools for the differently-abled, which had decided to wind up its project on the last day of November, gets a fresh lease of life. Following the intervention of IT Minister P K Kunhalikutty, Insight has been asked to resume its programme. An interim agreement will be signed between the IT Mission and SPACE until an expert committee which is looking into the possibilities of Insight programme submits a report. City Express had reported in these columns on Thursday that the non-renewal of contract between the department and the agency had pushed Insight into a financial crisis following which it was shutting down its operations at the two centres in the city. However, the Insight programme was released a fund of Rs 3.25 lakh on Thursday, which was the payment owing in September when the contract expired. The programme had become a blessing to hundreds of visually-challenged and differently-abled students and their parents in the city. Under the programme, free software tools were developed which were activity-oriented exclusively for the differently-abled. It has also tied up with the District Panchayat to take computer learning to the differently-abled in the outskirts of the district. A press statement from the IT Mission said that it had given utmost priority to the unique initiative to ensure continuity of the project and smooth functioning of its two centres. The expert committee will examine the proposal to roll out the project state-wide, the statement said.
