"I couldn’t pass on reports of people’s personal activities to the govt," Former ISI Director General Javed Nasir said.

Lahore: Former ISI Director General Lt Gen (Retd) Javed Nasir has said that an intelligence agency’s job should not be to peep into one’s private life, but unfortunately today most of the agencies were engaged in similar activities.

"It’s not the ISI’s job to see whose wife is going out with whom, and who is making money, but unfortunately all intelligence agencies are engaged in similar activities these days," the Daily Times quoted Nasir as saying in an interview with GEO TV.

"I turned down former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s offer to me to become the ISI chief because I couldn’t pass on reports of people’s personal activities to the government," he added.

He further said that ISI was not answerable to anybody because of its "authority", and that it was a wrong to assume that it a state within a state.

"ISI is not answerable to anybody because of its authority, but the perception that it was a state within a state was wrong," he added.

Nasir advised: "The ISI should keep itself away from politics, but rulers usually don’t know the real job of the intelligence agency, which is to present a crystal clear threat evaluation after co-ordinating all intelligence activities."

He, however, added that the ISI should only work on the prime minister’s directives.
