Inmates are hoping to make a career out of their artistic skills.

Mumbai: There are few jail inmates here in the city, who have decided to start their life afresh in the coming year. They are trying to draw their dreams on canvas from behind bars.

Inmates of six jails have got a new lease of life this holiday season. An art workshop inside Byculla Jail in central Mumbai is literally adding some colour to their lives. All of them are hoping to make a career out of their newly acquired skills.

"This is a way of expressing my deepest emotions," said an undertrial, Naveen.

"It's given me something to look forward to," he added.

Some of another inmate Lalitha's creations have already been sold in a series of seven paintings which fetched Rs 38,000.

It is a series of seven charcoal sketches which depicts the despair of life in jail. The sketch is up for sale at an exhibition in Mumbai next month - priced at Rs 7,000 each.

The proceeds of the exhibition will go to the arist - Baby Parkar, an undertrial at the Mumbai jail.
