Hong Kong: Jeev Milkha Singh on Sunday assured himself of the prestigious UBS Asian Tour Order of Merit title after he finished tied third in the Hong Kong Open golf tournament to open up an unbeatable lead of just under $ 206,000 over his nearest rival Prom Meesawat of Thailand.
Jeev, who has led the Asian Tour Money List since his win in Volvo China Open, sealed the UBS Asian Tour Order of Merit, with the tied third place that fetched him just over $ 103,338. It took his total to $ 573,442 while second placed Prom Meesawat has $ 365,771.
There is still one more event left on the Tour, the $ 700,000 Volvo Masters of Asia in Bangkok, where Jeev will try to become the first player ever to win both Volvo Masters in Europe and Asia.
He won the Volvo Masters of Europe last month and if he triumphs in Bangkok he will also achieve a unique 'Volvo treble' as he also won the Volvo China Open in April.
Jyoti Randhawa in 2002 and Arjun Atwal in 2003 are the other Indians to have won the Asian Tour Order of Merit, which assures the winner a lot of extra starts on various world events, including the British Open and World Golf Championship events.
Jeev, who has been on the Asian Tour since its inception in 1995, is considered one of the first superstars of the Tour. But in between he was laid low by injuries for a couple of seasons.
"It feels great to top the Money List. After more than 10 years on Asian Tour, I feel great to have finally accomplished this," an elated Jeev said.
