KOCHI: Music is his passion and it was this passion that brought him his soulmate. For Joseph Vazhakkan, the MLA from Muvattupuzha, music gives him solace from the hectic political life. “Listening to music is a craze. And it is this craze which has given me my life partner,” he says when City Express met him at Muvattupuzha. It was during a journey to Delhi that Vazhakkan accidentally met his future wife. “She was also in the same train. She was going to Delhi to attend a UPSC interview for Akashavani,” he says. As music was a passion for me, the relation with her, who was a singer, also grew, he remembers. For Vazhakkan, friendship is one that he always cherishes. He is always delighted in the company of friends but now has a feeling of missing most of them. Another unknown side of Vazhakkan is that phone has always been his weakness. “During the times I started my political career, phone was an important means of communication for me. I was a person who always communicated with others about party matters. Whenever there was an increase in the phone bill amount at the KPCC office, the office-bearers would just say that it could be because of Vazhakkan and no one else,” he says. Though a hardcore politician, Vazhakkan does not hide the fact that politics is more than acting. “After becoming an MLA, I have felt that more,” he says and adds that politicians frequent all places such as weddings, funerals and small functions.Noting that his family was a Congress one, Vazhakkan says he jumped into politics during his school days. “I played an important role in the formation of the KSU unit at Ramapuram St Augustine HS,” he remembers. On his political career, he says that when the party split into two groups, he stood by the I group. “It was after the merger of the two groups that I was made the general secretary of the KSU,” he says.On his college days, Vazhakkan says he was a full-time KSU activist. “When studying at the Law Academy, I seldom went home,” he says. Most of the time, the seasoned politician would be in hostels or party offices. Vazhakkan is all happy and satisfied to be a politician and that is why he proudly says he was part of all political developments in the Congress since the 1980s. On the developmental projects for his constituency, Vazhakkan says the focus would be on roads. “The constituencies lying near Muvattupuzha have witnessed large-scale development as they were always represented by ministers. So the preference would be to bring in infrastructure development to my constituency,” he says. Agriculture, especially pineapple cultivation, is another area that the people’s representative wants to concentrate on. Tourism and irrigation projects are some other sectors that Vazhakkan wants to take up in the coming days.
