Karnataka government plans to regulate social media

Bangalore: The Karnataka government is all set to regulate the social media, especially after recent instances of social networking sites being used for communal purposes. The Governor's speech of the Siddaramaiah government's priorities in his address to the joint houses of legislature on Wednesday talked about closer monitoring of social media sites.

The move comes in the wake of many saffron activists taking up campaigns a couple of months back that led to some communal tension.

In his address Governor HR Bhardwaj said, "My government is aware of the need to curb all attempts being made by fundamentalist organisations to vitiate communal harmony in different parts of the state. The role of social media in triggering such events needs to be monitored minutely and the government has been taken prompt, effective and unbiased administrative action to prevent any disruption of communal harmony."

It has already led to a raging debate in the state. The BJP is alleging that the Congress government is scared of Narendra Modi's popularity on social media and using it as a pretext to curb his growing popularity.
