The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea by the Delhi government seeking death penalty for those convicted of killing Nitish Katara. The apex court, however, said it would look at the enhancement of punishment, one between life sentence and death penalty.
According to the Supreme Court, Nitish Katara's murder was not a case of honour killing.
This comes almost a month after the top court rejected a plea by Neelam Katara, the mother of the victim, seeking enhancement of punishment for convicts Vikas Yadav, Vishal Yadav and Sukhdev Pehelwan.
Convicts Vikas and Vishal Yadav are undergoing 25 years imprisonment in connection with this case.
Nitish Katara, a business executive, was abducted from a marriage party in Ghaziabad on the intervening night of February 16-17, 2002, and was later killed by the Yadav brothers. The Delhi high court had awarded life imprisonment to both.
