New Delhi: The Chief Editor of daily Malayala Manorama K M Mathew on Friday said that Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan's allegation that the newspaper had received foreign aid from Congress for preventing the Communists from coming to power "is totally absurd and indecorous.”
Mathew said that Achuthanandanan was making the allegation against Manorama after reading a book written by former US ambassador Daniel Patrick Moynihan that Congress got financial aid from the US for ensuring Communists do not come to power in Bengal and Kerala.
"It is not fair for a Chief Minister to make such serious allegations against the media without proper enquiries. If he was making such a statement as a politician, there would have been no need of a rejoinder, but Achuthanandan is now the Chief Minister. It seems he forgets the position he holds,” Mathew said.
Mathew added that none of his Communist predecessors, E M S Namboodiripad, C Achutha Menon, E K Nayanar or P K Vasudevan Nair made such allegations against Manorama.
All of them might have gone through Moynihan's book, he said.
"Now Achuthanandan is powerful enough to institute an enquiry by any agency of the state. If he stands by the allegation, let him inquire. And If he doesn't he has to apologise to the people of Kerala," Mathew said.
