Bhopal: As the BJP government in Maharashtra announced that it will waive off farm loans, the party in Madhya Pradesh on Monday reiterated its earlier stand that loan waiver was not an issue in the state.
Party state head Nandkumar Singh Chauhan told media, “MP government is extending several types of grants to farmers already and it’s the first government in the world which is extending 10% subsidy on farm loans.”
When asked about the proposed satyagraha from former union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Chauhan said that those who destroyed the country are now doing Satyagraha. “Where were the Congress leaders when Swaminathan committee report was received during UPA rule,” he asked.
Targeting Congress he said that the opposition did nothing while the BJP is offering farm loans on 0% interest rate and even allowing 10% loan subsidy.
On Sunday, Agriculture Minister Gaurishankar Bisen had made similar remarks, saying that farm loan waiver was not required as the state government was not charging interest on agriculture loans.
These statements come in the wake of a fierce ten-day agitation, led by farmers in Madhya Pradesh, which saw six farmers die in police firing in Mandsaur and widespread unrest across the state. Loan waiver was among the prominent demands of the agitating farmers.
It’s interesting to note that MP was shaken by a spate of farmers’ suicides in 2016 and 2017, who embraced death due to the pressure of loans.
