The Commissioner of Animal Husbandry in Maharashtra has confirmed that eight cases of Bird Flu have been reported.

Mumbai: The Animal Husbandry department in Maharashtra has confirmed that eight cases of Bird Flu have been reported from Nandurbar district.

So far the infection has been restricted to birds and no human being has been infected.

Following the outbreak of the disease, Cabinet Secretary BK Chaturvedi has called for an emergency meeting.

Earlier this week, about 40,000 birds had died of Ranikhet disease in Navapur, 60 kms from Nandurbar, near the Maharashtra-Gujarat border.

After initial investigation, it was revealed that the birds died due to an infection caused by the R D virus.

About 52 poultry farms are located in the Navapur area and an outbreak of a disease like Bird Flu has set the alarm bells ringing in the state.

Preliminary action has been taken to avoid the spread of the infection. The area around which the birds were found is being isolated and the infected birds will be culled immediately.

Meanwhile, officials have assured that necessary precautions have been taken and there is no reason to panic.

Although all evidence to date indicates that the virus does not spread easily from birds to humans, the World Health Organisation has advocated careful monitoring of the situation.
