An undertrial in a theft case escaped from police custody following which a search has been launched to nab him, police said on Saturday.

Ramesh Kulsage was lodged in Chandrapur jail in connection with a theft case and on Wednesday he was being brought to be produced in a local court by police.

When the state transport bus, in which he was travelling with policemen, reached near Semana temple on Chamorshi road, the accused gave the police a slip and absconded with his handcuffs on. The policemen tried to chase him and also intimated the Gadchiroli police station, which is about a kilometer away from the spot.

However, even after three days, the police have failed to trace the accused, who was last seen in Gurwada forest on the outskirts of the city and his shirt and handcuffs were found there, Gadchiroli police station incharge Ghansham Palange said.
