THENI: A 32-year old cab driver, S Jayaprakash Narayan, set himself ablaze in Theni district on Monday, condemning the alleged attacks on Tamils in Kerala. Narayan, who sustained 90% burns, has been admitted to a private hospital in Madurai, where his condition is stated to be critical.Eyewitnesses said Narayan went to the Theni bus stand holding a can of petrol. “He climbed the pedestal of the Nehru statue, doused himself with petrol and set fire to his clothes shouting anti-Kerala slogans,” an eyewitness said. He screamed that the water level in the dam must be raised to 142 feet as per the Supreme Court ruling of 2006.Onlookers doused the flames and took him to the Theni Medical College Hospital from where he was shifted to Madurai.In an unusual gesture, Madurai Collector U Sagayam visited the self-immolation victim at the hospital.
