The Malayala Manorama group, the 118-year-old major in regional print media, has made its foray into the television media.

Kochi: The Malayala Manorama group, the 118-year-old major in regional print media, has made its foray into the television media with the launch of news channel MMTV on Thursday.

''For Manorama, which has more than 40 publications, this is the greatest diversification effort so far,'' an official statement said.

The network with three channels, one state-specific while the others with regional flavour, would be the first Malayalam channel with the state-of-the-art news gathering and news sourcing systems.

MMTV with MPEG-4 high-definition compression, signal conversion and networking products would be on par with the world media in collecting and disseminating news on time.

The channel would have five Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNGs) stationed in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, New Delhi and Mumbai and live bureau connectivity from all the 14 districts of Kerala.

The channels would have a plethora of current affairs programmes for the common public ranging from news bulletins to talks on the political, social and economic developments in the world.

Anil George is the Chief Operating Officer of MMTV. The News and Programme team of the network is headed by Johny Lukose, Director of News, K P Pradeep, Co-ordinating Editor and Jude Attippetty, Chief of Programmes.

In Kerala there are seven media groups that run several television channels, apart from the regional channel of the public broadcaster Doordarshan.
