Many Nitharis to focus on: Amar Singh

New Delhi: Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh refused to term the Nithari incident a reflection of any law and order problem, saying, “It is difficult to take cognisance of bedroom activities of people.”

Talking to Karan Thapar on the CNN-IBN show Devil's Advocate, Singh said the issue should not be politicised and that the guilty would not be spared, however high and mighty they may be.

Explaining why Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav kept away from visiting Nithari, he said Yadav did not want any law and order problem from either the BJP or Congress workers in the area.

Singh said the local police, under attack for alleged negligence, were the ones who had cracked the case and identified the culprits. "We have nothing to hide. It was our police force that found the case and the criminals," he said in the interview.

"The missing children's report is not deemed a crime until specifically a case of kidnapping or murder is registered," he added.

The SP leader questioned why the local BJP MP and MLA in Nithari were not being pulled up for not ringing the alarm bell about the missing children.

He also slammed the Congress over the Nithari killings, saying the party should be "equally ashamed" about such incidents in Congress-ruled states.

"I am ashamed for Nithari. Congress-ruled states where Nithari-like incidents have taken place should also be ashamed and there should be a CBI inquiry all over," said Singh.

Observing that Mumbai had the highest number of missing children in the country, he said the killings in Gurgaon in Haryana and Mukhtsar in Punjab, both under Congress rule, should also be brought to the forefront.

When he was asked why media was only talking about the Nithari incident and not about other similar cases, he said, "It could be because our chemistry is not gelling or our media management is poor."

Downplaying state minister Shivpal Singh Yadav's controversial statement describing the Nithari incident as "small and routine", he said that it was a case of bad articulation and the minister had not meant it.
