CHENNAI: Adding to the recent spate of stray dog killings, residents of Vellur village on the East Coast Road (ECR) alleged that workers from a residential complex butchered stray dogs. Residents and families claimed that workers driving a dumpster from a construction site, being developed by a private infrastructure company, dumped bodies of 45 dogs into a nearby lake on Monday. Kamalakannan, the resident who made the complaint, said, “We recovered 21 bodies from the lake and we were very disturbed over the findings. These dogs were our pets and we used to feed them every day.” Blue Cross of India officials said that three more bodies were retrieved, although several others floated away.Several children in the area seemed quite broken at the loss of their pets. A Blue Cross official said that a number of company employees, who witnessed the bodies being retrieved, were laughing at the incident. He added, “When we went to Cheyyur station to place a complaint, 75 villagers came with us in support.”Police said that investigations were on. However, when asked if any employee from the firm came forward for a statement, the official replied in the negative. Sathya Radhakrishnan, Joint Secretary of the Blue Cross, said, “The bodies of these dogs have been taken to a Veterinary College and added, “On request by the villagers, we will deliver the bodies back to Vellur for a proper burial, after post mortem. When contacted, a spokesperson from the firm said that they were aware of the case being filed. Further, he added that they had not received a copy yet, but rejected allegations that the dog slayings happened on their premises.
