Daegu, South Korea: India's woman long jumper Mayookha Johny finished ninth in World Athletics Championships here on Sunday.
Mayookha, who was the third Indian ever to qualify for the final of an individual event, registered her best, 6.37 metres, in the first leap. Her remaining two jumps were 6.31 and 62.6 metres. The 23-year-old's efforts in the final was way behind her performance in the qualification where she leapt to 6.53 meters.
The gold went to American Brittney Reese (6.83 meters) while Olga Kucherenko of Russia bagged the silver with a jump of 6.77 meters. Latvian Ineta Radevica missed the silver by a whisker and had to settle for the bronze with jump of 6.76 metres.
Among other Indians, Gurmeet Singh (1:26:34) and Babubhai Kesharabhai Panucha (1:26:53) finished 30th and 31st in men's 20km walk. Russia finished 1-2 with Valeriy Borchin (1:19:56) and Vladimir Kanaykin (1:20:27). The bronze went to Colombia's Luis Fernando Lopez (1:20:38).
