BANGALORE: Soon in Karnataka, the old and conventional radar will be replaced by stateofart, Sband Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) that has the capability to provide to predict fast evolving climatic conditions such as thunderstorms, cyclones and cloudbursts.
Director General of Meteorology, Ajit Tyagi on Monday said, "In Karnataka, we have started deploying the DWR in different phases, starting from the coastal belts. In the second phase, two cities, Bangalore and Mangalore will be included. As per the schedule, around 55 DWRs will be installed totally, out of which 20 are ready and by the end of next month each DWR will be thoroughly networked," Tyagi said.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) since the 1999 Orissa Cyclonic disaster has been making efforts to modernise its observational network across the country. The DWR system is more advanced than the conventional radar, which are being presently used by the IMD.
