BANGALORE: Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar distributed money amounting to `40 lakhs in the form of welfare schemes in his constituency Rajaji Nagar on Friday.Corporators of all wards coming under the constituency lauded his efforts to bring visible change in Rajaji Nagar while residents thanked him for distributing the money after a rather long wait.President of Srigokulam Mahila Sangam Devika Raj told City Express that they applied to the state welfare department to be recipients under various welfare schemes for several years now but to no avail. "We initially applied for `25,000 under the micro-credit scheme as we give loans for initial deposits among women vendors like flowersellers.Unfortunately, we were never nominated. For a year now we have been running from department to department and finally we received `5,000 under the micro-credit scheme," she said.Another lady who received `5,000 under the microcredit scheme said that the amount would not in real world help in setting up any business. She now plans to check if she can get into making and selling of artificial flowers following which she will enroll into a woman's group to avail monetary help. “If we invest `10,000 then we can expect a profit of `2,000 to `3,000. Now, even with the micro-credit amount, unless the women's group lend us money we cannot establish any small business like making papads or small handicrafts items,” said Shantamma, another recipient. The officials however say that the recipients' performance would be monitored before allotting them more money.Minister Suresh Kumar asked the recipients to use the money prudently and to help themselves to become independent. “Government has introduced several schemes for the benefit of all and to solve problems of those who still sleep on an empty stomach,” he said.Money was distributed under Chaitanya Margin Loan scheme, Traditional Handicraft Development scheme, Micro Credit Small Loan scheme and so on.
