The Nilgiris district plays an important role not only in tourism but also in agriculture in Tamil Nadu. Here several types of vegetables are cultivated, like potatoes, beans, beetroot, cauliflower, carrots, and broccoli, among others. In this situation, the Nilgiris Cooperative Sales Society is doing the work of selling the vegetables grown by the farmers here without any middlemen.
Due to this, farmers are benefiting greatly following the work done by the Co-operative Society in the district. Thus, the Nilgiri Co-operative Society is closely watched by many states. Meanwhile, a team from Mizoram has come to observe the activities of the Nilgiri Cooperative Society.
In the state of Mizoram, the new government led by the Chief Minister, who recently took charge on behalf of the Mizoram People’s Movement, set up an Agricultural Market Stabilization Fund Management Committee headed by the Minister of Farmers Welfare Cooperatives. The state government has promised to ensure a stable market for the most important agricultural products of Mizoram state, such as ginger, turmeric, miso chilli, and jaggery to stabilize the agricultural production and ensure that the farmers of the state get a fair and profitable price.
Following this, the Mizoram state government sent a six-member high-ranking team to Tamil Nadu, headed by Pi Ramdinliani, IAS, Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Welfare, and Department of Horticulture. It ordered to study the organizational activities and success story of the Nilgiris Co-operative Marketing Society in the district, which works to ensure that the farmers get a fair and remunerative price for their produce.
In the study, the working practices and the role of the Nilgiris Cooperative Marketing Society were explained in detail. Cooperative Joint Secretary Dayalan said that the officials from Mizoram state have come to inspect the activities of the well-functioning Cooperative Sales Society in the Nilgiris district.
