The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in Ghat areas of central Maharashtra on July 26 (Friday) and 27 (Saturday). Mumbai and Thane are likely to see moderate to heavy rainfall (yellow alert) on Saturday, while Ratnagiri, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Pune and Satara could see very heavy rainfall (orange alert). Palghar is in the green with possibility of moderate rain for Saturday.

A red alert has also been sounded for Konkan, Goa and Gujarat region on July 26.

FRIDAY RAIN MAYHEM IN MAHARASHTRA, GUJARAT, UTTARAKHAND

Pune remained marooned, while Shirol in Kolhapur saw waterlogging at several places, with people being evacuated amid flood-like situation. The visuals of a car being marooned in Akola went viral, while Satara district saw all tourist sports shut owing to the heavy rainfall.

All 14 crew members of a tugboat that had drifted in the Arabian Sea off the Alibag coast in Maharashtra’s Raigad district have been rescued, a police official said on Friday.

More than 2,500 people were shifted out of their homes as several villages were inundated due to heavy rains in south Gujarat, officials said on Friday. At least 2,200 people were relocated from villages and low-lying areas in Navsari, while 500 persons were evacuated in neighbouring Tapi district following heavy rains in 24 hours, they said. “Purna River passing through Navsari district has been flowing at 28 feet, well above the danger mark of 23 feet, due to heavy rains in the district and its upstream basin in 24 hours,” Navsari collector Kshipra Agre told reporters here. As many as 2,200 persons living in Navsari town and other surrounding areas have been shifted to shelter houses, where 15 medical teams were deployed, she said. At least 70 internal roads and four main roads were closed for vehicular traffic due to waterlogging, she said. In Tapi district, 500 persons from villages in Valod taluka were shifted to shelter houses due to flooding, the district disaster management cell said.

Villages in Valod, Vyara, Dolvan and Songadh talukas were waterlogged, and 113 internal roads were closed, it said in a statement. As per data from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), Dolvan taluka received 173 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, ending at 6 am on Friday.

Heavy overnight rain flooded the Balganga river in the Boodha Kedar area of Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district on Friday with the river water gushing into homes, inundating fields and damaging roads and bridges. Heavy rain lashed the Jakhana, Toli and Genwali areas around midnight, causing a flash flood in the Balganga, which inundated roadside fields and homes, District Magistrate Mayur Dikshit said.

Northwest India Forecast

Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm & lightning very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan; scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over JammuKashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan during the next five days.

Orange alert: Isolated very heavy rainfall also likely over Uttarakhand on July 26, 27, 29; East Rajasthan from July 26-28.

Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Arunachal Pradesh on July 28, 29; Assam, Gangetic West Bengal on July 26; Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland & Manipur on July 28, 30; Odisha from June 26-30; Jharkhand on July 26, 30; Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from July 26-28. Hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail over Assam and Tripura for the next two days.
