HYDERABAD: Terming the padayatra undertaken by TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu to highlight farmers' problems as a 'political yatra', the Congress legislature party members on Thursday remarked that the former chief minister had no moral right to talk about farmers' issues since he had totally neglected the agriculture sector during his nineyear regime. Instead of building confidence among the farmers and give constructive suggestions to the government, the opposition leader was trying to gain political mileage taking advantage of the drought conditions, they said.Addressing a press conference at the CLP office, Anantapur MP A Venkatarami Reddy along with MLAs K Venkatarami Reddy, K Sudhakar and others pointed out that Chandrababu Naidu had earlier opposed free power supply to farmers and described agriculture as unproductive and wasteful profession. The same person is now promising ninehour free power to agri sector, they said. The Congress government in the state has been providing free power to farmers since it came to power in 2004 and implemented various other major benefits like loan waiver, increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for farmers, Venkatarami Reddy said."The state government has now decided to provide interestfree loans to farmers. We have represented the drought in Anantapur district to state government and it has agreed to provide input subsidy to the tune of Rs 255 crore among several other measures," he said."Chandrababu Naidu proved inefficient and had failed to waive interest on crop loans even when farmers suffered crop loss due to drought,'' he said.
