BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik reiterated the demand that Home Ministry should pursue the Odisha Excise Bill-2005 to put it before the President for her assent as soon aspossible.In a letter to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Naveen said the state had three tragic incidents with a large number of deaths in 1992, 2006 and this month. The legislation will be very useful in dealing with such incidents. Naveen said the bill was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs by the secretary to Governor on January 28, 2009 seeking presidential assent.Stating that the proposed legislation seeks to replace the Bihar and Odisha Excise Act, 1915, Naveen said it has provisions for establishment of excise stations, trial of excise offences by special court and forfeiture of property of bootleggers. The proposed legislation will help in dealing with excise offenders more effectively, he said. The Chief Minister said the State Government has been reminding Centre about this matter several times and the BJD MPs have also raised the issue in Parliament.
