Ranchi: Naxal rebels, who claim to fight against repression, find nothing wrong in inducting minors between eight and 15 years in their organisation. They term children as cultural ambassadors of their movement.

'People's March', mouthpiece of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), justifies induction of children in their red squad. In an article titled "Revolution of Child Revolutionaries", children have been described as cultural ambassadors of Maoists.

"There are scores of children who do not have food to eat and clothes to wear. Here (in the Maoist organisation) children are changing their life by adopting the path of liberation," says the mouthpiece.

"The children who are now eight watch the arms struggle from the beginning and later they become the leaders of the organisation," it says.

It also quotes some children who joined the red squad and got liberation from repression.

"The children who join the red squad are trained how to lead life. They do not get knowledge of books but they learn how to lead real life," it says.

However, police officials involved in anti-extremist operations say the children are used as spies to keep track of police and informers.

"These children perform plays in the villages in support of the Maoists and allure people to join the red squad to fight the repression of police, moneylenders and others," said a senior official.
