WARANGAL: Scientists of the National Geological Research Institute (NGRI) and Central Mines and Fuel Research Institute (CIMFR) on Wednesday began tests to assess the damage to the ancient Ramappa temple at Palampet in Venkatapuram mandal due to blasts executed, as part of Devadula tunnel works.The scientists conducted blasts in three phases till this evening to examine the impact. It is learnt that latest equipment like the Richter scale and geo-phones were used to measure the tremors of blasts and the extent to which they can be felt. The tests would be completed by Thursday.The state government requested the NGRI And CIMFR for conducting tests following protests by the locals and environmentalists that the blasts were damaging the Ramappa temple. Accordingly, the scientists visited the temple last month but said that they cannot confirm the risk unless the impact during blasts was examined.Speaking to this paper, Prof Panduranga Rao said that the scientists were examining the issue in all angles and that they would submit the report to the archaeology department and the state government.The professor, belonging to Warangal district, earlier, led several programmes to motivate people to protect ancient temples.
