Anand, who had taken over as the Chairperson of the human rights body on February 17, 2003, retired upon completing 70 years of age, a Commission spokesperson said.

His tenure saw, among other important decisions, the judgment in the Punjab mass cremation case as well as monitoring of rehabilitation in post-riot Gujarat and development work in the starvation-affected districts of Orissa.

Prior to the NHRC posting, Anand was Chief Justice of India from October 10, 1998 to October 31, 2001. He had also served as Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 1985 and later in Madras High Court in 1989.
