A young man was allegedly killed on Tuesday at a Gurudwara in Punjab’s Phagwara by a Nihang Sikh over suspicion of sacrilage attempt. The accused accepted the crime and took responsibility for the incident on social media.
According to an HT report, the accused has been identified as Ramandeep Singh uploaded the video on social media and took responsibility of the crime. The accused later locked himself in the Chaura Khooh Gurudwara premises when the police reached the spot.
The victim is a migrant who had stayed at the gurdwara and allegedly desecrated it. The accused reportedly captured it on video and allegedly killed the man, as per a report in The Tribune.
In recent years, Punjab has witnessed multiple incidents of sacrilege attempts that triggered massive protests and demands for strict actions.
Sacrilege refers to the action of breaching or showing disrespect such as violation of religious sites, artifacts, or symbols towards something regarded as sacred or holy, especially in Sikh religion.
Last year, protests broke out across Punjab after a man allegedly hit two Sikh priests and desecrated the Guru Granth Sahib at the gurdwara in Morinda. Police arrested Jasvir Singh and booked him for hurting religious sentiments and attempting to murder.
The incident drew condemnation from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and other leaders cutting across political parties as well as Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh and SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami.
Earlier, a man allegedly desecrated the Sri Gutka Sahib, a holy book of the Sikhs, at a gurdwara in Gurdaspur’s Shuor Kalan village. Local residents have demanded strict action against the accused, identified as Sucha Singh, over the sacrilege incident.
