Uttar Pradesh police may claim they have ramped up patrol along the highways following the horrific Bulandshahr gangrape, but evidence on video shows otherwise.
A ground reality check by CNN-News 18's team along the highway in Meerut on Monday night revealed shocking lapses in the security system. Policemen were found sleeping on roadside beds, completely unaware of what was happening around, while their superiors were found resting in their official vehicles.
When confronted by the media, the policemen said they were not sleeping. Camera footage showed some of them pulling their trousers up, others were seen hurriedly putting their caps back on. While some of them tried to hide their faces, one policeman smiled sheepishly as he tried to pull his socks up after being caught napping on a charpoy.
A little away from the highway, the scene at the police station in Daurala was equally shocking. Policemen were absent from the workplace and dogs were seen sleeping inside.
The expose comes a day after Uttar Pradesh DIG Javed Ahmed said a special highway security system will be implemented in next 36-48 hours across the state.
"We have planned a special highway security system, which will be implemented in the next 36-48 hours. All vulnerable stretches were identified across the state for adequate security for the safety of people traveling on highways," he had said.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati slammed the UP police for their callous approach towards the law and order situation in the state.
She said, "TV channels show policemen sleeping on highways. This shows the Samajwadi Party's commitments towards law and order. It clearly shows the police have not learnt any lessons from the horrific rape on NH-91 that shook the nation."
