MPs are baffled with the organiser's masterplan that hasn't made any allocations for training of the Indian athletes.

New Delhi: With three years to go for the Commonwealth Games in the Capital, parliamentarians are baffled with the Organising Committee's masterplan that hasn't made any allocations for training of the Indian athletes.

In its 195th report for grants of the Sports Ministry for the year 2007-08, the Standing Committee on Human Resource Development found out that all the allocations have been made only in tune with the infrastructural development, and ignored athletes' preparation.

Though rapid works are on to improve the infrastructure of New Delhi ahead of the showpiece event with state-of-the-art facilities, organisers seem to have ignored grooming India's own medal-winning prospects.

"The Committee is surprised to know that funds have been projected for every other activity such as construction of games village, stadia, roads, transport etc, but not for the training of our sportspersons for the Commonwealth Games," the report says.

"The Committee is of the opinion that the Ministry must create a special corpus for the training of athletes for the Commonwealth Games and other such events," it adds.

Hosting the Commonwealth Games has primarily been seen as en effort to bring a "change in perception of sports in the country," but no detail has been spared for that very objective.

"The Committee, therefore, strongly recommends that every effort should be made for a world-class training of our athletes on a regular basis."

There also seems to be less attention paid on detail and estimation, as the report also found ad-hocism in these areas.

"It seems there exists no clear schematic guidelines in this regard. The Committee strongly recommends the Ministry to come out with a clear guideline in this regard so that the expenditure on bid process and other necessary expenditure can be met," it said.
