Now, brides under fire in dowry cases
If the Delhi HC's order is anything to go by, it's time for the bride's family to watch out for paying dowry.

New Delhi: The report of a dowry harassment case usually spells bad news for groom. But if the Delhi High Court's order is anything to go by, it's time for the bride's family to watch out.

The Delhi High Court on Friday ruled that a case of dowry harassment could go against the wife's family if the dowry had been given with their knowledge.

"I consider where these kinds of allegations are made, the police should simultaneously register a case under Dowry Prohibition Act against the parents of the complainants as well, who married their daughter despite demand of dowry", PTI quoted Justice Dhingra as saying.

The decision came as Dhingra dismissed a petition of a woman seeking registration of dowry harassment case against her in-laws' family.

Dhingra added that in case huge amounts of money was willingly paid during or after the marriage, it should be brought to the notice of the Income Tax Department.

The court pointed out that the bride's family was guilty if it solemnised the marriage despite a demand for dowry. "These kinds of allegation made after the breakdown of the marriage show the mentality of the complainant," the Court said.
