HYDERABAD: The Kiran Kumar Reddy government on Sunday claimed improvement in the power generation and supply positions in the state in spite of the ongoing Sakula Janula Samme in Telangana.Energy department officials claimed except for scheduled power cuts to different sectors, there have been no unscheduled cuts or tripping throughout the state. At present, the demand for power is around 269 million units (MU) per day and the discoms are able to supply about 230 MU, resulting in a shortfall of 39 MU.The gap is being managed by imposing power cuts -- four hours in Hyderabad, six in the district headquarters and municipal corporations and eight in the mandals and municipalities and only night-time power supply (6 pm to 6 am) in villages.Besides, a two-day power holiday along with evening peak-hour restrictions i.e.from 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm have been imposed on industry. At a meeting of senior officials convened by chief secretary Pankaj Dwivedi to review the situation arising out of the Telangana strike, energy officials explained their efforts to reduce the demand-supply gap and procure more coal from different sources in the country. The chief Secretary directed them to strive for further improvement in the power situation.Officials said APTransco has purchased 36 MUfrom power exchanges on a day-ahead basis.Around 650 MW (15.5 MU) of power purchase has been tied up for October from inter- and intra-state generators. As regards public transportation, officials said about 1,000 buses were run in the capital on Sunday as against 900 on Saturday.Efforts were being made to convince the striking employees to resume duty. The civil supplies commissioner informed the meeting that arrangements have been made to ship `1 rice to ration shops in time for the launch of the scheme on Nov.1.Dwivedi directed the excise department to constantly review the supply of liquor stocks and delivery from distilleries.Special chief secretary for environment and forests M Samuel, principal secretaries Ajay Mishra, Ashutosh Mishra, Dinesh Kumar, Lakshmi Parthasarathy, APTransco MD Ajay Jain and other senior officials attended the meeting.
