Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday decided to forego the title of head of the Zardari tribe and to pass it on to his son Bilawal following the death of his father Hakim Ali.
President Zardari decided not to become the tribal chief and to pass on the mantle to his son Bilawal, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.
Hakim Ali, who died earlier this week after a prolonged illness, was the head of the tribe.
According to tribal tradition, consequent to the death of the chief, his eldest son takes over as the new head.
Babar said the transition to new tribal leadership is formalized in a customary gathering of tribal elders called 'dastar bandi' that is held on or soon after the 'soyem', the third day of prayers for the dead chief.
The formal 'dastar bandi' ceremony to herald Bilawal as tribal chief has been put off till "such time when the overall conditions in the country are more conducive", Babar said.
The President is "sensitive to the sensibilities involved and has advised to withhold customary tribal ceremonies", he said.
