The resurgence of Zika virus has once again sparked concern among residents in Pune after six new cases were reported in the district. Health officials confirmed that among the reported cases, two are pregnant women, intensifying worries about potential complications.

Zika virus, transmitted primarily through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, shares vectors with dengue and chikungunya. Identified first in Uganda in 1947, Zika can lead to severe health issues, especially in pregnant women, including microcephaly—a condition affecting fetal brain development.

Affected Pregnant Women’s Conditions Stable

One of the affected, a 28-year-old woman from Erandwane, tested positive on Friday, June 28, with another 12-week pregnant woman also confirmed infected on Monday, July 1. Fortunately, both women are currently asymptomatic.

Local Doctor and Family Infected

A 46-year-old doctor from Erandwane was the first case reported, followed by his 15-year-old daughter. Two additional cases emerged in Mundhwa, affecting a 47-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man.

Recognizing Zika Virus Symptoms

Zika virus symptoms typically manifest within 2 to 14 days post-infection, with some patients showing signs as early as within a week. Common symptoms include mild fever, skin rashes, joint pain—particularly in the hands and feet—eye redness, muscle pain, headache, and fatigue. Some may also experience discomfort and stomach pain.

Health authorities advise vigilance and prompt medical consultation for anyone displaying these symptoms, urging preventive measures against mosquito bites.
