CHENNAI: Just a day after the announcement of the revised fee structure in the State, parents of a CBSE school in Thiruvotriyur went on a hunger strike to protest against the school, which reportedly charged its students high fees. The school authorities, however, claimed that they had not received any information about the release of the revised fee list.On Thursday, more than 50 parents of Kavi Bharathi Vidhyalaya in Thiruvotriyur staged a hunger strike claiming that the school was overcharging the students. The school demanded Rs 18,000 for an LKG admission, apart from forcing parents to pay Rs 22,500 as donation to an NGO, for which receipt was issued only for `2,500, alleged Nirmala Mary, president of the Kavi Bharathi Vidhyalaya Students Parents Association. “On learning about our strike, Thiruvotriyur MLA K Kuppan met the Principal. He told us that the school officials had not received the new fee structure, but promised to implement it if it was found satisfactory,” Nirmala added. The school had been permitted to charge Rs 5,000 as LKG fees by the Private School Fee Determination Committee, according to its senior principal Meena Suresh. “But the amount is meagre compared to our infrastructure and remuneration to staff, so we appealed against the previous fee structure announced in May 2010,” she said, adding that the school charged `14,000 as annual fees for admission to LKG this year. Referring to the revised fee structure, she said she had not collected it as no intimation about it was received from the CEO’s office.Officials in the district CEO office, however, clarified that distribution of the new fee list had begun on Tuesday, and most of the 419 schools in the district which had gone on appeal had collected it. But nobody approached them from Kavi Bharathi Vidhyalaya, an official source said. Tiruvallur CEO P Selvakumari said an intimation about issuance of the revised fee structure had been made to all schools, though most of them were already aware of it through media reports.
