New Delhi: Chess prodigy Parimarjan Negi, just twelve, has become the youngest International Master of the country.

Negi beat Grandmaster Sergei Erenburg of Israel in the fourth round of the Masters section of Hastings International Chess Congress in England.

Playing with white, the Delhi boy won the game after 73 moves.

"I feel good to have completed the IM title as I was trying for it for sometime," Parimarjan said.

"Now I will concentrate on my GM norms. I am very grateful to my sponsors Tata Group and Air India and all my friends and well wishers."

He is the joint leader of a star-studded field, with 3.5 points out of a possible four and shares the lead with Grandmasters Vladimir Belov of Russia, Milos Pavlovic of Serbia, Valeiry Nevenor of Ukraine, Bogdan Lalic of Croatiaand International Master Simon Williams of England.

Earlier, in the second round of the tournament, Negi had beaten English Grandmaster Mark Hebden while in the third, he had drawn with higher rated International Master Jean Pierre Le Roux of France.

Currently 2396 on the latest ELO rating list, Negi needed around 24 points to become the next IM and cleared that barrier as he now stands to gain 30 ELO rating points from the first four rounds.

Negi is in fact now running for the Grandmaster's norm in the event for which -— going by the current statistics -— he needs three points in next five rounds.
