Mumbai: Stranded passengers returning home from Egypt on Tuesday complained that Air India charged a hefty sum of Rs 45,000 to Rs 55,000 for a one-way ticket to Mumbai.
The national carrier has countered the allegation by saying it did not make any “huge profits” as propagated by some quarters.
In a press release, the Air India stated: Air India Ltd would like to clarify that it ONLY recovered costs and NOT made any "huge profits" as alleged / propagated by some quarters. The exercise, initiated in tandem with Government advise, was aimed to assist stranded Indian passengers in Egypt.”
While Air India does not operate to Egypt, other global carriers which operate from there, like Egypt Air, Qatar Airways, Oman Air and others, were also demanding "very high fares" and that too in cash at the Cairo airport, said passengers who returned by Air India to Mumbai this morning.
Air India firther defended itself by saying that it also ferried passengers who "gave an undertaking to pay the air-fare" on their arrival in India.
Air India could operate one more special flight to Cairo soon, official sources told.
