Periyar statue desecrated in Coimbatore
The statue of Periyar E V Ramasamy was found desecrated in Coimbatore on Saturday morning.

New Delhi: The statue of Periyar E V Ramasamy was found desecrated in Coimbatore on Saturday morning.

Following this a Hindu Makkal Katchi loyalist was arrested for his involvement in the incident.

A flag of Dravida Kazhagam was found burnt and the rope tied as noose was seen around the neck of the life-size statue of 'Periyar' in Puliyakulam.

According to the police the spectacle on the statue was kept on the forehead.

After the initial report the police rushed to the spot and removed the burnt remains of the flag and the noose. The police has deployed force in adequate number to avoid any untoward incident.

Necessary security has been provided to other statues of Periyar and also other leaders in and around the city.

Another statue of the rationalist leader had been desecrated at the temple town of Srirangam in the first week of December, leading to state-wide protests and violence.
