BHUBANESWAR: Once in great demand, the State handloom sector has fallen on bad days due to a variety of reasons like rising cost of inputs and materials, prevalence of obsolete techniques, lack of proper marketing network and little scope for skill development. Besides, though weavers of the State are highly talented, they need certain technical and marketing guidance in order to woo customers in the national and international market. To address these shortcomings, special measures have been initiated by the State Government. Sources said steps will be taken soon to set up a handloom park in Bargarh district which has the biggest handloom cluster in the State. This would help in capacity building of the weavers and also teach weaving to the people of non-weavers community. The proposed Sambalpuri Ikat handloom park would be perhaps the second handloom park in the country.Apart from this, the Textiles Department has roped in fashion designers to revive the handloom sector. Sources in the department said reputed designers like Sabyasachi Mukjerjee and Rajesh Pratap Singh will begin work on a project with the Orissa State Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society and Sambalpuri Bastralaya.
