Close on the heels of the demand raised by members in the Legislative Assembly for stern action against plastics usage, a team comprising the departments of Science Technology and Environment (DTSE), revenue, food and drugs and municipality on Thursday raided a godown at T V Nagar and seized banned plastic bags worth between Rs 7 lakh to 9 lakh.
The plastic bags were all below 20 microns as well as below the permissible size, DTSE environmental engineer N Ramesh told Express. It was stored in bundles, which could be more than 100 in the godown of Victory Polymer, a stockist. Based on a tipoff, the team raided with gauge metre and found the plastic bags, he said. The premises had been sealed.
It may be recalled that on December 9, 2009, Puducherry Government had banned the usage and manufacture of plastic products less than 50 microns, disposal cups, plates and polythene or plastic carry bags and the size less than 8 x 12. Now as per the act, a showcause notice would be issued to the owner of the godown.
During the recent budget session, members cutting across party lines expressed the need for implementation of the ban. Plastic is seen as the main cause for clogged drains here.
