MARADU: The Municipality here launched the second phase called ‘Plastic Waste-free Maradu’ under its ‘Clean City’ drive on Tuesday. The attempts are to free the municipality area from the plastic waste. As part of the initiative, the Municipality workers will collect the plastic wastes from the houses as well as the public places. According to Maradu Municipal Chairman T K Devarajan, the second phase of the Clean City drive is being implemented through Kudumbasree units. “A member has been selected from each of the Kudumbasree unit in 33 wards of the municipality to execute the drive. Already, these units have been provided with the necessary equipment, including vehicles, to collect plastic wastes,” he said. The Chairman added that the plastic waste thus collected will be recycled to ensure complete success of the initiative. “A private company has been assigned the task of recycling the waste,” he said.Devarajan also said that the Municipality will soon launch the third phase of the Clean City drive. “As part of the third phase, we are planning to construct a waste treatment plant in the municipality area,” said Devarajan. However, the municipal officials are concerned over the implementation of the third phase. “The municipality is densely populated and it would be difficult to find an area to construct the waste treatment plant. However, we are looking for one,” said a Municipality official.
