Thiruvananthapuram: In fresh trouble for former chief justice of India KG Balakrishnan, a Thiruvananthapuram court on Wednesday directed the police to look into allegations of amassing of wealth by his family members.
The Income Tax Department has also launched an investigation into disproportionate assets of Balakrishnan's family members. The department will submit its report in 10 days.
The state also ordered on Thursday an investigation by the vigilance department against Balakrishnan's son-in-law PV Srinijan on charges of possessing disproportionate wealth.
The direction to look into allegations against the ex-CJI's sons-in-law Srinijan and MJ Benny and brother KG Bhaskaran was issued to Kochi Police Commissioner by First Class Judicial Magistrate AM Basheer on a private complaint.
The petitioner, Francis Pradeeplal, sought an inquiry into allegations against the three family members of Justice Balakrishnan, now Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission.
The directive comes days after a vigilance court in Thrissur admitted a petition filed by an NGO seeking a probe into charges against Balakrishnan's family members.
The case, in which Justice Balakrishnan is cited as the first respondent, has been posted to January 18 for further hearing.
In the wake of the charges of amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income in the last four-five years, Srinijan had resigned from Youth Congress while Bhaskaran had quit from the post of government pleader in the High Court.
Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan had also recommended a vigilance probe into the charges after he received a complaint.
Kerala Bar Council had earlier requested President Prathiba Patil to order a probe into the charges against Balakrishnan's family members while the bar associations of Kozhikode and Thrissur have also made similar demand.
