MADURAI: ‘Pottu’ Suresh, DMK executive committee member and a close aide of Union minister M K Alagiri, was produced before the judicial magistrate court II on the charges of extortion here on Friday.Saravanamuthu, a GRH doctor, had misappropriated funds of Rs 1.25 crore from the Sri Hospital, Arapalayam, which he was managing on behalf of a relative, Ganesh, working as a software engineer in Singapore. When Ganesh’s wife, Ponmani, came to know of it, she questioned him and attempted to take legal action against him. He reportedly sought the help of another doctor, Navaneethakrishnan, who introduced him to ‘Pottu’ Suresh. Using the Sures’s political clout, Ponmani was called for talks and threatened by the men to hand over the hospital for a paltry sum to Saravanamuthu. Annamalai, who was working as the DIG (registration) at Madurai then, helped them register the hospital in their name. After the change in government, Ponmani filed a complaint with the central crime branch, based on which a case was registered against Saravanamuthu, Navaneethakrishnan, Sankari, Saravanamuthu’s wife, Annamalai and Suresh. Saravanamuthu, Navaneethakrishnan and Annamalai were arrested on Monday. Suresh was brought as prisoner on a transit warrant from the Palayamkottai prison. The judge remanded him till September 6.
