Owing to ageing factor and over-heating, an over-head conductor at 66kV electrical sub-station at Harohalli, which supplies power to Harohalli 220kV electrical sub-station ‘snapped’ at about 3.40pm on Friday. All the pumps at Harohalli pumping station, which supply water from the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme, remained non-operational due to the snapping. When Express spoke to BWSSB Chief Engineer Narayan, he said, “All the pumps, which supply water under Cauvery First Stage, Second Stage, Third Stage and Fourth Stage, First Phase got tripped for about one-and-half hours. While the power supply was resumed 5 pm, the pumps failed to resume. The KPTCL engineers along with our engineers rectified the snap and the pumps of Cauvery first stage too, resumed at about 9.50 pm.” However, due to this, Bangalore south and east areas which mostly depend on water from this scheme, will be badly hit. There will be no water supply at Johnson Market, Byrasandra, Jayanagar ‘T’ Block, HSR Layout, Austin Town, Ulsoor, Neelasandra, Anepalya, Domlur, Adugodi, Kormangala, Indiranagar, and surrounding areas.
“There are about 52 pumps which run round the clock. If there is an interruption in power supply even for a minute, it takes at least half-an-hour for all the pumps to resume to their fullest capacity. Supply will resume only by Saturday,” said a BWSSB engineer.
“The Board should find some other alternates. If they had announced this earlier, we would have collected more water on Friday. Other than the Cauvery water, we do not have any other source for water,” said Shanti Dorai, a resident of Chalwadipalya.
In March last year, a tree branch fell on the supply line at T K Halli. Following this, there was no water supply for a day in the city
