BANGALORE: Industry bodies have expressed concern over the condition of electricity supply in the state. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM) expressed serious concern at the sudden drop in electricity supply. J Crasta, co-chairman, Southern Regional Council of ASSOCHAM, termed the situation as “grim” and sought urgent remedial measures to ensure regular power supply resumes. While the situation in the state is better than neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the turn of events over the last few days has brought the state to the brink of a virtual crisis, he observed. The tripping of 4 units of Raichur Thermal Plant Station (RTPS) at the peak of summer load is rather unfortunate, he opined.According to reports, the state is heading towards huge deficit of over 2,000 MW. Consequently, the distribution companies are forced to resort to extensive load shedding, he said, and added that there are fears that industry may also have to face long cuts, if the situation remains the same.According to an estimate, one percent deficit in power supply leads to loss of almost one percent potential growth in GSDP. Hence, to maintain a high growth economy, it is essential that economic activities in the state are not disrupted.
