Mumbai: Congress candidate Priya Dutt, daughter of late Sunil Dutt, filed her nomination papers on Thursday for the by-election to the Mumbai North West Parliamentary constituency.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of Sunil Dutt who was also the union minister for sports.
After filing her nomination papers, Priya, who was always by her father's side during his political tenure, said Congress President Sonia Gandhi has handed her a big responsibility by asking her to represent the seat earlier held by her father.
"Irrespective of whoever is fielded against me, my goal is to continue my father's work for the welfare of the people," she said, expressing confidence that she would benefit from the goodwill of her father's work.
She also thanked all the other six MLAs from the constituency for their support.
"We will work together for the Congress party's victory in the by-election," she said.
Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena is yet to finalise its candidate for the polls.
In then last elections the party had fielded Sanjay Nirupam against Sunil Dutt, but Nirupam is now with the Congress.
However, Priya Dutt has decided to continue the defamation suit filed by her father against Nirupam, who had made some unparliamentary comments against Dutt during the election campaign.
Her sister Namrata will fight the case, while Priya will be the witness.
